The Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women, formerly known as the S.I.E.T. Women’s College, established in the year 1955, by Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed, former Judge of the Madras High Court and his wife Mrs. Fathima Akhtar, began as a Second Grade College with 110 students. The Foundation was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, (the first Prime Minister of India) in the presence of MoulanaAbulKalam Azad, (the first Education Minister of India). The College is administered by the Southern India Education Trust and the Chairman of the Governing Council isMr. Moosa Raza, former Chief Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir and Secretary, Government of India, a Padma Bhushan Awardee. The Campus extends across 13 acres of lush greenery in the heart of Chennai city with a student strength of 7257. The College offers 27 Undergraduate, 13 Postgraduate, 6 M.Phil. and 4 Ph.D. Programmes to all eligible women.The spacious and adequate infrastructure is in tune with the latest technological developments and upgraded to achieve excellence in academic and co-curricular activities with a Gymnasium for fitness. Multi-Disciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre (MRCC) strengthens research activities. The Career Guidance and Placement Centre facilitate On Campus placements in reputed companies for more than 60% of the registered students every year. The alumnae have also carved a niche for themselves in the society. The College was accredited by the NAAC in 1999 with ‘5 Star’ status, re-accredited in 2007 with ‘A Plus’ status and in 2013 with a CGPA of 3.61 out of 4 at ‘A’ grade. The autonomous status has been extended from 2018-2019 to 2027-2028 by the UGC. The College has received grants from FIST, DST and awarded the coveted CPE status by the UGC in 2016 and the Star College status by the DBT in 2021.
